We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The JRC's European Union Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM) is actively involved in the development and promotion of alternative approaches to animal testing with the aim to replace, reduce or refine the use of laboratory animals (the 'Three Rs') in the safety assessment of chemicals and the quality control of biologicals (e.g. vaccines).
With the aim to progressively reduce the current reliance on animal models, EURL ECVAM promotes the dissemination of non-animal approaches, their application in industry as well as their acceptance by regulators.
To this end, EURL ECVAM also coordinates the EU-wide independent validation to assess the relevance and reliability of methods for specific purposes.
