We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) is a European Commission initiative on better knowledge management for sound EU policy making. To strengthen the Commission’s overall response to the opportunities and challenges related to migration, the KCMD aims to be the point of reference to support the work of Commission services and Member States on migration and related issues.
It will allow for analytical and networking activities accompanied by a repository of relevant research and new initiatives to deepen knowledge and understanding.
One of the main challenges for EU policy-makers engaged in addressing migration in the short term is to capitalise on the wealth of existing but fragmented and not always easily accessible knowledge at all levels – local, national, European and global. Another equally important challenge is to better anticipate future migration flows and population trends and to better understand their impact on health, welfare, education and the economy. In order to assess accurately the longer term implications of migration- and population-related consequences, enhancing the knowledge base is necessary.
The aim is to provide EU policy and decision-makers with better and timelier policy-relevant knowledge and evidence-based analysis in order to strengthen the response to the challenges posed by migration and fully seize its opportunities and benefits. In addition to supporting the European Agenda on Migration, the focus will be on migration developments at global scale and their demographic impact on the EU in the medium to longer term.
