We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
Nitrogen and phosphorous compounds from agricultural and urban areas are major responsible for water quality degradation in many EU and Enlargement countries. Agriculture accounts for about 55% and 25% of, respectively, nitrogen and phosphorus total loads entering untreated our seas, while discharges from point sources account for 25 % and 60% of the nitrogen and phosphorus loads.
