Managing Nitrogen and Phosphorus loads to water bodies: characterisation and solutions

Nitrogen and phosphorous compounds from agricultural and urban areas are major responsible for water quality degradation in many EU and Enlargement countries. Agriculture accounts for about 55% and 25% of, respectively, nitrogen and phosphorus total loads entering untreated our seas, while discharges from point sources account for 25 % and 60% of the nitrogen and phosphorus loads.
