We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
Never give up. Nothing is impossible until it happens.
Nunca desistir. Nada é impossível até acontecer.
Prof Elvira Fortunato is Vice-Rector and Full Professor of Materials Science at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Director of the Materials Research Center of the Associate Laboratory Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication.
Fortunato pioneered European research on transparent electronics, namely thin-film transistors based on oxide semiconductors, demonstrating that oxide materials may be used as true semiconductors. In 2008 she won her 1st Advanced Grant from ERC for the project “INVISIBLE”, and in 2018 year she got a 2nd one with the project “DIGISMART”.
She is member of the Engineering Academy of Portugal, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea and European Academy of Sciences. She has been conferred national and international prizes like the Doctor Honoris Causa in 2009 by Gallati University, the grade of Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator given by the President of the Republic of Portugal in 2010 and the Blaise Pascal Medal for Materials Science given by the European Academy of Sciences in 2016.
In 2017 she received the Czochralski award granted by the Polish Academy of Sciences. She participates in the High Level Group of the Scientific Advise Mechanism of the European Commission since 2016.
