The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
This Code of Conduct has been created in response to the increasing energy consumption in data centres and the need to reduce the related environmental, economic and energy supply security impacts. The aim is to inform and stimulate data centre operators and owners to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective manner without hampering the mission critical function of data centres. The Code of Conduct aims to achieve this by improving understanding of energy demand within the data centre, raising awareness, and recommending energy efficient best practices and targets.
This Code of Conduct is a voluntary initiative aimed to bring interested stakeholders together, including the coordination of other similar activities by manufacturers, vendors, consultants and utilities. Parties signing up will be expected to follow the intent of this Code of Conduct and support a set of agreed commitments.
The European Code of Conduct for Data Centres was launched in 2008 with the aim of improving the energy efficiency in data centre, a sector of growing energy consumption (predicted to reach 100 TWh in year 2020). The Code of Conduct is a voluntary initiative, managed by the JRC, which sets ambitious voluntary standards for companies willing to participate (Participants). The Code of Conduct identifies and focuses on key issues and agreed solutions, described in the Best Practices document. In addition to the Participants, companies (Vendors, consultants, industry associations) can also promote the Code of conduct to their clients. These companies are recognised as Endorsers.
Participants that significantly reduce their energy consumption are eligible for the annual EU Data Centres Code of Conduct Awards.
