The digital transformation of news media and the rise of fake news

Today the European Commission proposed to create a Code of Practice to combat the rise of disinformation and fake news in online media.  You can find the press release here: http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-3370_en.htm

These policy proposals were in part based on an economic analysis of online news media markets produced by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The study is available here:

https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/publication/eur-scientific-and-technical-research-reports/digital-transformation-news-media-and-rise-disinformation-and-fake-news

It tracks the platformisation of online news markets and looks at potential market failures as a result of the rise of algorithm-driven news distribution platforms (search engines, aggregators and social media platforms). It does not directly address the machine learning mechanics of the underlying algorithms but focuses on the impact of these algorithms on news markets.

This study was produced by the Digital Economics team in the JRC.
