Disaster risk reduction

Extreme weather conditions and natural disasters are increasingly frequent and violent. Climate change is likely to increase the frequency and magnitude of these extreme conditions and disasters which have devastating effects on the development of a country and can destroy the achievements of long-standing initiatives.

Increasing the capacity to manage such events can reduce the conomic, social and human toll of these countries. Resilience to these weather conditions, disaster management and adaptation must be part of a long-term sustainable development planning.

Our approach

EU helps its partners preventing and recovering from climate-related natural disasters. In December 2018 at COP25 in Katowice, the EU joined the InsuResilience Global Partnership. Launched in 2017 as a joint G7, G20 and the Vulnerable Twenty (V20) initiative, the Partnership helps developing countries becoming more resilient to natural disasters, in particular by providing insurance solutions.

Our programmes

Disaster risk reduction Tanzania

The Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) is a EU flagship initiative which helps the world's most vulnerable countries to address climate change. Started in 2008, it has become a major climate initiative with over 70 projects  in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

The GCCA+ works to build climate resilience in three main areas of intervention:

  • mainstreaming climate change into poverty reduction and development efforts
  • increasing resilience to climate-related stresses and shocks (promoting disaster-risk reduction)
  • supporting the creation and implementation of concrete adaptation and mitigation strategies, plans and actions

The ACP-EU Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Programme was launched in 2011 as an initiative of the ACP Group of States. Funded by the EU, it is managed by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). The ACP-EU NDRR Programme supports Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation activities in ACP countries through technical assistance, capacity building and advisory/analytical work.
