The importance of our habitat

The purpose of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

What the EU is doing

The EU research and innovation agenda supports cities and urban regions in becoming actors of open innovation helping them accelerate the transition to sustainable, low-carbon societies.

An integrated research and innovation framework for smart and sustainable cities:

  • co-ordinates better and streamlines research and innovation on urban issues
  • enables a sustainable and systemic approach to innovation
  • develops new business and governance models
  • provides the knowledge to for informed decisions on investments in key infrastructure, policy-making, planning and land use management.
