We organised a pan-European 'Data 4 Healthy Recovery Hackathon' from 18-20 June 2021, to solve the most pressing smart health challenges proposed by European industry.
The 48-hour long hacking marathon was an innovative way to find solutions for the most pressing smart health and digitalisation challenges Europe faces today.
Preparations for the hackathon began at the beginning of the year when participants could start to sign up for the event from 27 February.
All together, the hackathon had 520 participants from countries across Europe and also countries participating in the European Commission’s COSME programme (the EU programme for the competitiveness of enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises). These participants provided 46 different smart health ideas.
The TOP 32 teams who got the chance to hack 9 challenges proposed by industry experts were chosen by a jury.
The final challenges
The final 9 challenges were
- Personalised predictive medicine - by Estonian Biobank
- Data extraction and centralisation for better decision making - by MyVitale
- Safe workplace of the future - by Spaceti

The final 48 hours
48 hours full of brainstorming sessions, interesting talks, mentoring from top-notch industry players and heavy teamwork culminated on 20 June where the teams had to submit their demos for the jury members and the TOP 20 teams passed to the finals. This was a great live broadcast where everyone could watch the pitches and demos and keep their fingers crossed for their favourite teams.
At the awards ceremony the winners of the hackathon were announced.
As well as the winning title, these teams will get a chance to participate in an intensive 3-month long acceleration programme, full of interesting workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions with industry experts and technical mentors, to develop their initial prototypes into a working product or service.
See all the hackathon winners!
The #Data4EURecovery Hackathon turned out to be so much more than 'just a hackathon'. And it is only the beginning of the journey.
We would like to thank everyone who joined and got involved, all the mentors, challenge and community partners who helped to make it happen.
