Once again, it’s time to celebrate the winners of Juvenes Translatores, our annual translation contest for schools.
We welcome the 27 winners, their proud parents, teachers and friends at an online award ceremony on 18 June at 15.00 Brussels time. The ceremony will be on YouTube live and Facebook live and remain available on these channels to watch later.
Besides meeting the winners online, viewers can follow the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s greeting to the young translators. The ceremony will also feature Director-General of DG Translation, Rytis Martikonis. Also an experienced Commission translator will reveal his secret to learning 32 foreign languages.
The winners were selected by the Commission’s translators from among 2800 participants from schools across Europe. In addition, 248 students received special mentions for outstanding translations. The participants could choose to translate between any two of the EU’s official languages. Of the 552 language combinations available, 150 were used by the young translators.
The aim of this annual translation contest is to promote, recognise, and reward language learning and to inspire young linguists. The ability to speak foreign languages is a major asset for young people entering the job market. In an increasingly connected and global economy, employers actively seek multilingual candidates capable of adapting to and thriving in an international context.
