On Tuesday 26 July, European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will represent the European Commission at the extraordinary meeting of the Energy Council of the European Union. They will present to EU ministers the Commission's "Saving Gas for a Safe Winter" package, published on 20 July, which includes a new legislative tool and a European Gas Demand Reduction Plan to reduce gas use in Europe by 15% until next spring.
Ministers will discuss the proposals and examine the overall energy situation in the EU and in each EU country in the context of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Together with the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, German Galushchenko, EU ministers and Commissioner Simson will also discuss EU-Ukraine energy cooperation over a working lunch. Following the Council discussions, Commissioner Simson will take part in a joint press conference with the Czech Presidency of the Council.
