About this initiative

Summary

The proposed act will complement the Animal Health Law as regards disease notification, surveillance, eradication programmes, and conditions for recognition and maintenance of disease-free status of countries and areas. It will apply to diseases affecting terrestrial and aquatic animals. The act will provide for up-to date rules, reflecting new technical standards, in line with the latest expert and scientific knowledge and most recent international standards.

    The Commission must re-examine this proposal and consider the implications for otherwise strong, low-risk herds, being held under unnecessary restriction for at least 12 months. Suckler herds rely on being able to get away their annual crop of store cattle at an appropriate time of year and having to keep these animals will result in no income for a year as well as potential welfare problems from having to hold on to cattle they may not have...
