Summary

This online event took place at the optimum moment in a major European Commission reform process: the Impact Assessment of the GI reform – to “strengthen GIs”, as requested by President Von Der Leyen in her Mission letter to Commissioner Wojciechowski. This reform process is now underway and requires an intensive consultation of stakeholders.

The conference served as the focal point for stakeholders to make their views known on the range of issues in the reform process, from delivering sustainability to addressing the legal challenge of protecting GIs on the internet. Producers, stakeholders and EU country officials were able to participate and give their views on the different panel sessions.

The conference also highlighted GI developments, notably concerning e-Ambrosia and GI-View project, and included a panel on options for non-agricultural GIs.

This conference was the follow-up of “Trade Marks and Geographical Indications: future perspectives”, the 2018 conference jointly hosted by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Commissions' Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, which explored the intersect between GIs and trademarks.
