Joint meeting of the Expert group for horizontal questions concerning the CAP and the CDG CAP
As part of a broader initiative to improve the food supply chain, the Commission has been considering whether there needs to be an increase in market transparency. This initiative also includes elements of the regulations on producer cooperation (addressed in the omnibus regulation of December 2017) and the proposal for a Directive on unfair trading practices. The combination of these three elements is a direct response to the challenges detailed in the Agricultural Markets Task Force’s report from November 2016.
To help address these challenges, a previous workshop with academic, industry experts, national and international organisations on market transparency was jointly organised by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Commission's department for agriculture and rural development. This event, which took place in May 2018, was intended to assess the scope and nature of any possible EU action which might improve the functioning of sectoral food chains through increased market transparency.
As a second step, the department of agriculture and rural development gathered Member States’ delegates (Expert group for horizontal questions concerning the CAP) and stakeholder organisations (Civil Dialogue Group CAP) for a discussion. During the workshop, delegates discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the current system of market transparency and considered which improvements were needed along the sectoral food chains.
