Stop Food waste

The 10th meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste will be held virtually and will provide the opportunity to discuss recent developments in food loss and waste prevention across the EU, as well as on an international level

The meeting will kick-start with an opening statement by EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides, followed by a discussion on the re-establishment of the Platform for a new mandate, as of 2022. Member States and private sector organisations will also take the floor to present concrete initiatives that demonstrate how the work of the Platform and its recommendations for action, adopted in 2019, supported their activity on the ground.

The Commission will provide an update on its work on date marking activities as well as on food waste measurement and setting of EU-level targets for food waste reduction (flagship actions under the food waste strand of the Farm to Fork Strategy). Platform members will also share best practices in these areas.

International organisations will update the Platform on recent developments at global level, such as the publication of the Food Waste Index by the United Nations Environment Programme, the development of a Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and work carried out on “game changers” to reduce food waste in preparation of the United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021.

Last but not least, the agenda includes presentations from the Commission on the development of the EU Code of Conduct for sustainable business practices under the Farm to Fork Strategy, as well as on support to food waste prevention initiatives offered through the EU’s LIFE Programme.

The meeting will be chaired by Nathalie Chaze, Director, Food sustainability, international relations, and will be held exclusively in English; translation will not be provided in the context of this virtual meeting.

Interested stakeholders can follow the discussions live via webstreaming. The recording and the presentations will be published on the European Commission’s food waste website shortly after the meeting takes place.
