On 12th September, a Citizens' Dialogue was held with Head of Rep Ognian Zlatev and the Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva in Velingrad.
The moderator was Tanya Mihaylova, Director of the Diplomatic Institute of Bulgaria. Together with the participants, they discussed the Bulgarian presidency, the positive side of EU membership for Bulgaria, the opportunities that the EU gives to young people, the complicated political situation in Europe and the need to be active citizens.
The participants, primarily students from high schools in the region, expressed their concerns about Bulgaria not being an equal EU member after 11 years of membership, the low living standard in the country and the economy. Most of the questions concerned Bulgarian issues, rather than EU global issues.
One of the conclusions from the discussion is that EU needs to be united, and Bulgarians need to actively search for their place in the EU as equal members.
