Commissioner Gabriel Live Chat

Citizens' Dialogue online with Commissioner Mariya Gabriel on the Digital Education Action Plan

You can watch it here

“I am delighted that education has become a cross-cutting issue, requiring the cooperation of all. We are not creating an education eco-system out of nowhere. It's a challenge but also an opportunity: let's act together "

EU Commissioner Mariya Gabriel (Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth)

On 14 July 2020, Commissioner Mariya Gabriel participated in a Live chat on the Digital Education Action Plan. Commissioner Gabriel recalled that the new action plan, updated version of that of 2018, takes into account the lessons learned from the Covid-19 crisis, in terms of connectivity in rural and remote regions in particular. The “Connectivity for School initiative” should, from this point of view, allow better connections and more inclusive programs. She emphasized the need for more digital skills for pupils and teachers, and the need for creating a European base for micro credits.

The new plan will also ensure a "more coherent and holistic" approach.

Commissioner Gabriel deplored the under-representativeness of women, and wished to encourage them to make a career in ICT. From this point of view, the media have a key role to play in taking care not to convey stereotypes. Artificial intelligence must also be framed by ethical principles and clearly defended.

She reminded that 60% of European universities already share common platforms and launched a call for concrete ideas and for "a coalition to assess needs to provide specific responses" in member states.

The Commissioner recalled in conclusion the key ideas of the action plan (working with youth, teachers, women and the private sector), without forgetting the importance of follow-up to remain credible with citizens.
