The event was part of a series of Citizens' Dialogues that involve the whole European Commission and take place in all EU Member States.
French journalist Elsa Grangier invited Executive Vice-President (EVP) Frans Timmermans and Léo Cohen, Member of the Governance Committee of the Citizen convention on Climate for an online Citizens’ Dialogue, in an exceptional format due to the sanitised measures imposed by the coronavirus.
The speakers discussed the action plans for a green recovery, as well as its societal aspect and citizen appropriation, and the impact on pan-european legislation to protect the environment.
In order to keep this debate open to citizens, the Representation has collected citizens’ questions and concerns beforehand through our Europe Direct Network and social medias.
A young girl, Celia Payet, who wrote the European Declaration of the rights of the planet together with 310 European children called out Mr Timmermans. The Declaration was presented on the nomination day of Mrs Von der Leyen, Celia asked the EVP what was the future of this Declaration.
He replied acknowledging the work of these children and explaining that those articles were guiding this Commission in its work with the Green Deal. He invited the children to call him out between 6 months to one year from now, to verify if the actions of the European Commission were going in the right direction for the environment.
