‘Basecamp Berlin’ hosted a Citizens' Dialogue with Commissioner Vestager. The event was co-organized by the Huffington Post Germany in the framework of their series ‘HuffPost EU -Townhall: The EU and future challenges’.
The motivated discussion with a roomful of students and younger employees touched upon a wide range of issues such as the future of Europe (especially European Elections) and current challenges related to the Commissioner’s portfolio.
The lively moderator Cherno Jobatey (Editorial Director of the German HuffPost) motivated the audience to engage actively in the Dialogue and asked the Commissioner precise questions in a rather outright manner.
Participants wanted to know more about how the European Union is dealing with digital giants and their data (Google, Facebook) and how successful competition policy affects the rights of citizens.
A special feature of this Dialogue was the presentation of several video clips from European citizens asking their questions relating to their country of origin and expressing their immediate concerns. Regarding Greece, the demographic challenge and its relation to migration policy was raised.
The European Elections were discussed in the context of President Macron's taking of the conflict between the defenders of the EU and of national sovereignty.
