Consultation on Deepening the Economic and Monetary Union

In Athens, the Representation of the European Commission hosted a consultation on the future of the Economic and Monetary Union. Participants included social partners, think tanks, NGOs, representatives from civil society, esteemed academics and journalists. The Deputy Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Greece, Mr. A. Peroulakis, opened the discussion and moderated the panel. Mr. C. Allen Resident Adviser at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs in Greece gave a presentation on the Five Presidents' report on completing Europe's Economic and Monetary Union.

Participants focussed on ongoing developments in the EU with an emphasis on the Banking Union, Fiscal Union and democratic accountability. They also referred to the social dimension of the EMU deepening pointing to the need to further reduce unemployment and poverty across the European Union.
