Open decision making

The European Union's activities affect millions of European citizens' lives, so decisions need be taken openly. This is why the Commission remains transparent when preparing these decisions and who participates in them.

As part of the Commission's transparency policy, citizens have the right to know who receives funding from the EU budget and to be given access to documents which contribute to any legal acts.

The public’s views play an important role in the EU-decision making process and they may, among other options, submit petitions to European Commissioners on relevant issues. Commission departments will respond to all such petitions in writing.
