EMAS is a voluntary environmental management tool for companies to help evaluate, report on and improve their environmental performance.
As of May 2016, more than 4000 organisations representing more than 9000 sites were EMAS-registered.
In 2005 the Commission became the first European institution to be EMAS‑registered, and the scheme now covers all major Commission sites in the EU, representing 1.5 million m2 of office space.
