The project involves a construction of a low cost Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, based on rebuilding the existing vessel "Fjalir". This upgraded vessel will be a flexible alternative to other state of the art technologies as well as larger scale, land based fuelling infrastructure. The vessel will operate in the Port of Stockholm.
The project aims to present a viable alternative by Q3 2013 which will allow stakeholders from the shipping industry as well as port operators to evaluate and test the LNG bunkering vessel in advance of the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) requirements coming into force in the Northern Europe on 1 January 2015.
The bunkering vessel will be tested in 15 test runs and 1,000 tonnes of LNG will be fuelled through the use of the bunkering vessel. This corresponds to a reduction of 300 tons of CO2 and 10 tons of SO2. The test results will be measured in close collaboration with the Swedish Transport Agency and the County Administrative Board who is the main authority in charge of environmental permits.
The results will enable to evaluate the potential of such a bunkering vessel and to define the need for future permits in regards to an increasing use of LNG as a fuel in the shipping industry.
