Interzalia: Intermodal Station Project in Zalia

The Action concerns studies for the design of an intermodal station framed within the Area of Industrial and Logistic Activities of Asturias. The creation of the intermodal station will make this area the most important logistics space in the north-west of the peninsula. The intermodal station will facilitate process optimisation and favour synergies between customers and users, improving traffic efficiency and freight distribution between the areas connected by the trans-European Transport Network. It will improve the port to port transport and develop sea routes for the transport of freight entering and leaving the ports of Gijon and Aviles. It will increase the railway participation share in land freight transport and improve road/rail and rail/sea transport and the logistic efficiency in the freight transport of the influence area of the intermodal station. The intermodal station will increase the modal shift from road to other modes of transport (sea/rail).

The main objectives of the Action are to:

  • Provide the ZALIA logistics platform with the detailed design of the multimodal terminal and the road access to it.
  • Study the freight volumes per mode and per type.
  • Provide solution for the management model of the intermodal terminal.

State of progress on 31 December 2014:
Location of the intermodal station and development of optimal alternatives for road access have been completed. Design of the management model for the station has been carried out. Detailed design of the terminal is ongoing.
