Greening transport 2013-NL-92062-S

Study including pilot deployment to determine the viability of LNG as an alternative fuel for medium and long distance road transport (LNG4Haul)

The project's overall objective was to seed the growth of the LNG (liquefied natural gas) road infrastructure and contribute to European renewable energy targets by establishing an operational market for LNG within a short period of time.

It had two specific objectives:

  1. Build a LNG/LBG (liquefied bio gas) supply chain at pilot scale in The Netherlands to expand the scope of the current LNG/LBG use towards medium to long haul dispatches and ultimately roll-out a European LNG/LBG network for road transport. The pilot LNG/LBG fuelling stations had to be constructed at Nieuwegein, Heteren, Veghel, Utrecht and Geldermalsen.
  2. Eliminate the risk perceived by logistic service providers in switching to LNG as a fuel for medium to long distance road transport due to a lack of operational data. A study including data collection from the pilot operations was crucial to overcome current obstacles and show the economic viability of LNG/LBG as a transport fuel. The data will feed the study and new business models for a switch to LNG/LBG as a fuel for road transport and the results from the data analysis will be disseminated to the industry, main stakeholders and decision makers at the European level.

The Action was successfully completed, with the exception of the Heteren's refuelling station, which was not built by the end of the Action.

The action is closed.
