Study to prepare the construction of a new lock and deepening waterway IJsselmeer to improve better access to the TEN-T inland waterway network.
The lock complex in the Afsluitdijk physically connects the North Sea with the IJsselmeer and consequently, the European hinterland. The complex contains two locks, a small one for recreational shipping and a larger one for class Va ships to pass through the Afsluitdijk. As a result of scaling-up in shipping, an increasing number of ships cannot use this lock and thus need to take a longer route via Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In addition, the IJsselmeer waterway itself is not deep enough for container vessels and coasters.
This project consisted of preparatory studies for the construction of a new lock at the Lorentz complex, the deepening of the IJsselmeer waterway, as well as the creation of a fish migration river. The studies also included the design, Environmental Impact Assessment and other planning procedures.
