MXPT2LINK-UP
This Action is aimed at completing the recent improvements of rail services to Malpensa airport. Since September 2010, in fact, a direct connection of high speed “Frecciarossa” trains is operational from Florence-Bologna to Malpensa and since December 2010, Malpensa is connected from both Milan downtown and from Milan Central stations.
The Action consists of the final design of the railway link between the Malpensa Intercontinental Airport Terminal 1 and the Airport Terminal 2, for a length of about 3.8 km, including a new railway station to be located at the Airport Terminal 2.
This Action represents a fundamental step to implement the link between T1 and T2, allowing the procedure to secure governmental and regional funding to commence and to launch related tender procedures. It is included in the list of infrastructure developments connected with the "Expo 2015" international event.
The “T1-T2 link” will allow Malpensa airport to cope with the forecast increase of traffic (9.9 million passengers are expected in 2015), contribute to lower operations and maintenance costs and save around 20 minutes in connection time for passengers.
Overall, the improvement of the rail connection will increase Malpensa catchment area (main cities of Northern Italy and the neighbouring Switzerland cantons) and reduce the share of less “environmentally friendly” transport modes.
