Studies for the development of the motorway project of PP7 (Igoumenitsa/Patras-Athens-Sofia-Budapest Motorway Axis)
Priority Project 7 (Motorway Axis Igoumenitsa/Patra-Athina-Sofia-Budapest) will provide significant improvements to the road network of southeastern Europe. Initially, it involved the construction of two new motorways in Greece-Via Egnatia (from Igoumenitsa to Kipi) and Pathe (Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki and Evzoni). In 2004 it was extended to connect to the neighbouring countries and Central Europe: one branch to Sofia and Budapest and another towards the port of Constanta.
The project is focused on the preparation of a strategic study related to the development and upgrading of Priority Project 7. In order to achieve homogeneity, a global overview and strategic approach of the entire axis will be performed, both in terms of future traffic volume demand forecasting and minimum operational standards and geometric characteristics. This aims to secure the appropriate prioritisation of interventions and an optimum allocation of resources.
