Improving access to the TEN-T Core Port of Felixstowe/Harwich: Haven Channel deepening project
The development of the next generation of container ships was requiring European ports to ensure that they have access routes which could safely accommodate them. Harwich Haven Authority is the statutory harbour authority covering the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich, Mistley and their seaward approaches. The ports handle significant amounts of containerised traffic from deep sea and short sea shipping routes.
This Action concerned studies related to deepening the navigation channel and approaches to the Port of Felixstowe, located in Harwich Harbour, to increase the maximum size of vessel which can be handled and to reduce the tidal restriction on current and future vessels.
The deepening will increase the main channel depth from the previous 14.5 metres below chart datum to 16 metres below chart datum. Dredging to achieve this requires the removal of up to 23 million cubic metres of material.
The Action was successfully completed.
The action is closed.
