Hub of Torino, section Susa-Stura, Priority Project 6, removal of bottleneck

Programme:

The railway hub of Torino plays a crucial role in the national and international traffic flows of Italy. The global project, begun in 2000, is part of Priority Project 6(Railway axis Lyon-Trieste-Divača/Koper-Divača-Ljubljana-Budapest-ukrainian border). It consists of the construction of two new underground connections between the stations of Porta Susa and Stura that will replace the current railway line on the surface. The resulting two double-track tunnels will constitute the continuation of the Lingotto-Porta Susa bypass, which was activated in 1999 and represents a key part for the arrival of the high-speed trains to Torino.

The objectives of the investment are to adapt the network to the high-speed traffic and improve the train service in the greater metropolitan area of Torino by separating regional traffic flows from the medium/long distance and by eliminating traffic interferences between fast and slow trains (removal of the bottleneck).

The interventions covered by this project are the continuation of the global project until December 2011, required to complete the works. The project covers:

  • Realisation of civil works, railway infrastructure installation, electric traction, quadrupling of tracks at the Porta Susa-Rebaudengo tunnel entrance (corso Grosseto).
  • Installation of signaling equipment of Porta Susa & Rebaudengo stations and the Porta Susa-Stura line section.
  • Realisation of additional tracks with the corresponding platforms and pedestrian subways, as well as the installations for electric traction and signalling of the new station of Turin Stura.
  • Construction of a new electric substation in Turin Stura, necessary to fulfil the anticipated traffic increase once the scheme is put into service.

This project has been completed.
