Hub of Torino, section Susa-Stura, Priority Project 6, removal of bottleneck
The railway hub of Torino plays a crucial role in the national and international traffic flows of Italy. The global project, begun in 2000, is part of Priority Project 6(Railway axis Lyon-Trieste-Divača/Koper-Divača-Ljubljana-Budapest-ukrainian border). It consists of the construction of two new underground connections between the stations of Porta Susa and Stura that will replace the current railway line on the surface. The resulting two double-track tunnels will constitute the continuation of the Lingotto-Porta Susa bypass, which was activated in 1999 and represents a key part for the arrival of the high-speed trains to Torino.
The objectives of the investment are to adapt the network to the high-speed traffic and improve the train service in the greater metropolitan area of Torino by separating regional traffic flows from the medium/long distance and by eliminating traffic interferences between fast and slow trains (removal of the bottleneck).
