Lyon-Turin railway project: French accesses to the Base Tunnel

The new freight and passenger rail link between Lyon and Turin, part of Priority Project 6 (railway axis Lyon-Trieste-Divaca/Koper-Divaca-Ljubljana-Budapest-Ukranian border) will act as a key node between both northern and southern Europe (London/Amsterdam/Paris-Milano) and east and west (Lisbon-Budapest). It will considerably shorten travel times for high-speed passenger traffic and provide an environmentally friendly response to the steadily increasing demand for freight transport over the Alps.

This project concerns studies on the French access from Lyon to the "Base Tunnel" (section Lyon-Saint Jean de Maurienne). The passenger and freight itinerary will be mixed on the main part of the section, except near Chambéry, where the high speed passenger line will pass through a 15 km tunnel under the Dullin-L'Epine mountains. Freight traffic will avoid the city of Chambéry entirely and will be channelled through the 24 km Chartreuse tunnel.

The pre-design studies will look at the alignment of the new railway line (including topographic, geological, geotechnical, technical, environmental, economic, socio-economic studies) and preliminary studies for the connections to existing lines.

The project has now been completed.
