Secure health data exchange of patients with rare hematological diseases thanks to CEF Telecom

INEA ceased operations on 31 March 2021. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) was established on 1 April 2021 to take over its legacy portfolio as well as additional EU funding programmes.

Gathering 66 highly skilled and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in 15 Member States, and advanced specialized medical equipment and infrastructures, the European Reference Network (ERN) EuroBloodNet facilitates concentration of resources for the design and implementation of high-quality and cost-effective services aimed at facing the challenges of Rare Haematological Diseases (RHDs).

By this pooling of the best expertise on RHDs at the European level, ERN-EuroBloodNet continuously allows the access to highly specialized healthcare to thousands of patients affected by RHDs, becoming also beneficiaries from the trans-European connectivity ensured through Core Services. It is in their promotion of use and adaptation to the RHD specific needs, where relies the key success of such tools.

In this context, the European Commission together with the European Reference Networks set up the eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure for the ERNs. With support of funds from Connecting Europe Facility, DG SANTE developed two IT systems necessary for proper cooperation among the members of the network. Those systems are the ERN Collaborative Platform (ECP) and the Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS), which constitutes a secure web-based application to support the networks in bringing expert specialised care to all patients in Europe on the diagnosis and treatment of rare or low prevalence complex diseases or conditions across national borders.

Accordingly, ERNs offer the potential to give patients and doctors across the EU access to the best expertise and timely exchange of life-saving knowledge, without having to travel to another country.

European Reference Networks (ERNs)

European Reference Networks (ERNs) are virtual networks involving healthcare providers across Europe. They aim to facilitate discussion on complex or rare diseases and conditions that require highly specialised treatment, and concentrated knowledge and resources
