The first call for applications for free Wi-Fi hotspots opened today (15 May) at 13:00 (CEST). Through this call, municipalities across the EU (+Norway and Iceland) will receive a WiFi4EU voucher of €15,000 to finance Wi-Fi equipment and its installation in public spaces. To be eligible to apply, municipalities first need to be registered on the WiFi4EU.eu Portal.
The selection will be based on a 'first-come first-served' basis, while ensuring geographic coverage across Europe. This is the first of a total of five calls that will be published until 2020. This first call will close 15 June, 17:00.00 CEST.
The WifI4EU initiative aims to contribute towards digital inclusion, improve coverage in disadvantaged areas, reinforce mobility and promote digital literacy. It also promotes the use of services offered by entities with a public mission.
It is part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Telecom Work Programme, aiming to create European networks of digital services that will make the Digital Single Market work in practice.
The implementation of the WiFi4EU initiative is managed by INEA on behalf of the European Commission. For more information about the call:
