Creation date: June 4, 2020
The European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) has started its activities on 1 June 2020. EDMO will serve as a hub for fact-checkers, academics and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate with each other and actively link with media organisations, media literacy experts, and provide support to policy makers.
The activities of the European Digital Media Observatory will be based on five pillars:
The creation of the Observatory is one of the elements in the Commission’s detailed Action Plan against Disinformation. The plan aims to reinforce capabilities and strengthen cooperation between Member States and the EU in four key areas: improve detection, coordinate responses, work with online platforms and industry, raising awareness and empower citizens to respond to disinformation online.
EDMO is funded through the Connect Europe Facility. The consortium was awarded EUR 2.5 million, from a call launched in October 2019, and was selected from among seven applicants.
A €9 million EDMO Generic Services call will open on 30 June organised by INEA.
