Almost €3.4 billion requested for cross-border energy infrastructure projects

INEA ceased operations on 31 March 2021. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) was established on 1 April 2021 to take over its legacy portfolio as well as additional EU funding programmes.

The 2020 CEF Energy call closed yesterday 27 May 2020 with INEA receiving 28 proposals in the areas of electricity, gas, smart grids and cross-border carbon dioxide network (breakdown below).

Admissibility and eligibility of the proposals will now be checked and the proposals will then be evaluated against the specific award criteria of the call. The entire evaluation process, which will involve external experts, is expected to be concluded by October 2020, when the results will be announced.

The selected proposals will contribute to:

  • Ending energy isolation
  • Increasing competitiveness by promoting the integration on the internal energy market and the interoperability of electricity and gas networks across borders
  • Enhancing the Union's security of supply
  • Integrating energy from renewable sources and developing smart energy networks
  • Eliminating energy bottlenecks
  • Completion of the internal energy market
  • Contributing to sustainable development and protection of the environment, inter alia by the integration of energy from renewable sources and by the development of smart energy networks and cross-border carbon dioxide networks
  • Providing other benefits, e.g. in relation to the European "Green Deal" objectives

In line with the European Green Deal objectives, and in response to the public debate and the views of the European Parliament, the Commission will put an enhanced focus on the contribution to climate neutrality objectives when assessing the applications for funding submitted under this year’s call.
