MERLON

Integrated Modular Energy Systems and Local Flexibility Trading for Neural Energy Islands

The project is focussed on the development of an Integrated Modular Local Energy Management Framework for the Holistic Operational Optimization of Local Energy Systems with high shares of distributed RES.

The project will enable novel business models, allowing local energy communities to introduce local flexibility markets (for local energy system optimization), while paving the way for the realization of novel 'Microgrid-as-a-Service models', and assigning to local DSOs the role of “Aggregator of Aggregators” for the provision of added value services to the overlay distribution grid.

To address these objectives, MERLON will configure and integrate innovative suite of tools, services and applications for all local stakeholders involved in the local energy system, enabling the improvement of the quality of service in their networks, with an accurate forecast demand response and demand flexibility potential.

The MERLON solutions and the integrated optimization framework will be validated in two local energy systems/pilot sites located in Austria and France, enabling innovative solutions with high replicability potential across the EU. Furthermore, the project envisages an international cooperation with India which will facilitate the replicability and transferability of MERLON solutions in the Indian market context.
