The Action contributes to the implementation of the PCI 4.7. “Capacity increase of hydro-pumped storage in Lithuania — Kruonis,” which aims to install a new 225 MW variable speed (asynchronous ) unit.

The Action's aim is to carry out studies determining the most suitable technological solution to be selected for Kruonis hydro pumped-storage power plant's (HPSPP) expansion, as well as to assess the long-term socioeconomic benefits to the grid and the market in the regional context in the light of the integration of the Baltic States' electricity network into the Continental European network.

Once the Action is completed the PCI could enter the final investment decision phase.
