A body established by Council Decision 2008/381/EC that serves to meet the information needs of Union institutions and of EU Member States’ authorities and institutions, by providing up-to-date, objective, reliable and comparable information on migration and asylum, with a view to supporting policy-making in the European Union in these areas.
1. The EMN was set up in 2003 by the European Commission on behalf of the European Council in order to satisfy the need of a regular exchange of reliable information on migration and asylum related issues on a European level. It also serves to provide the general public with information on these subjects.
2. The EMN is co-ordinated by the European Commission, assisted by service providers, in co-operation with EMN National Contact Points (EMN NCPs) in each EU Member State. A Steering Board, consisting of representatives from each Member State, the European Commission and the European Parliament serves to provide the political guidance on the activities of the EMN.
