A system for the exchange of visa data between Schengen States, which enables authorised national authorities to enter and update visa data and to consult these data electronically.
With a view to being progressively rolled out in the different regions of the world, the Visa Information System (VIS) started operating in North Africa on October 11, 2011.
VIS processes data and decisions related to all applications for short-stay visas to visit or to transit through the Schengen Area. Through quick, safe and secure biometric verifications, VIS will deliver faster border checks, more accurate visa procedures, better protection of travellers against identity-theft and more security. All Schengen States' consular posts worldwide should be connected to VIS within two years.
