Today the Commission proposed to improve the overall efficiency of EURODAC, the system collecting fingerprints of asylum seekers which is an essential part of the EU's Common European Asylum System. EURODAC helps the quick and correct identification of the EU country responsible for assessing an asylum claim.

The EP votes on the Common European Asylum System

A crucial step towards a common system for handling asylum applications in the EU has been taken today as the European Parliament adopted several measures that form the future Common European Asylum System. These include common procedures, the creation of a basic set or rights for asylum seekers arriving in the EU and a proposal to stop transfers to member states struggling to cope with the number of asylum seekers and related responsibilities.

Stateless person

Person who is not considered as national by any State under the operation of its law.

Non-EU national

Any person not having the nationality of an EU State.

Identification

The process of determining a person's identity through a database search against multiple sets of data (one-to-many check).

External EU border

An EU States’ land borders, including river and lake borders, sea borders and their airports, river ports, sea ports and lake ports, provided that they are not internal borders.

Dublin Regulation

Lays down the criteria and mechanisms for determining the EU State responsible for examining an application for asylum lodged in one of the EU States by a non-EU national.

Database

A logical collection of information that is interrelated and that is managed and stored as a unit, for example in the same computer file. The terms database and data set are often used interchangeably.

Citizenship

The particular legal bond between an individual and his or her State, acquired by birth or naturalisation, whether by declaration, choice, marriage or other means according to national legislation.
