Yesterday the European Commission reached an agreement with Turkey on a Joint Action Plan to step up their cooperation on migration management in a coordinated effort to tackle the refugee crisis. At the European Council last night, Heads of State and Government of the EU's 28 Member States endorsed the agreement and welcomed the joint Action Plan.
Commission Visa Progress Report: Turkey makes progress towards visa liberalisation
The Commission has today adopted the second report on progress by Turkey in fulfilling the requirements of its Visa Liberalisation Roadmap, highlighting the steps made by Turkey since the last report of October 2014. At the EU-Turkey Summit of 29 November, Turkey committed to accelerating the fulfilment of the Roadmap, including by anticipating the application of all the provisions of the EU-Turkey Readmission agreement, with the objective of completing the visa liberalisation process by October 2016, provided all the benchmarks have been met by then.
Today, in Brussels, the negotiators of the Commission, Director General Manservisi, and of Turkey, Ambassador Yenel, have initialled a Readmission Agreement, which reflects the EU and Turkey shared interest in a more effective migration and border management.
Today, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström handed over to the Kosovo government the roadmap to visa liberalisation. The pace of the visa dialogue will depend on the Kosovo government’s progress in implementing reforms related to the freedom of movement, such as reintegration and readmission, document security, border and migration management, the fight against organised crime and corruption and fundamental rights.
First Commission report on progress by Kosovo towards visa liberalisation
The Commission presented today the first report on the progress achieved by Kosovo in fulfilling the requirements of the visa liberalisation roadmap. It evaluated Kosovo’s progress in each block of the visa roadmap and made a set of recommendations for the Kosovo authorities in areas where more decisive action is needed to obtain visa-free travel for its citizens.
The report was discussed today at a meeting in Pristina between senior officials' from both sides, led by Director General Stefano Manservisi for DG Home Affairs and Minister for European Integration Vlora Çitaku.
EU-Turkey Readmission Agreement signed and Visa Liberalization Dialogue launched
This morning, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, in visit in Ankara at the invitation of the Turkish authorities, signed, with the Turkish Minister of Interior Muammer Güler, the EU-Turkey readmission agreement, and initiated, jointly with the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoğlu, the EU-Turkey Visa liberalization dialogue.
Commission assesses progress by Turkey in visa dialogue
Today the Commission presented its first report on progress by Turkey in fulfilling the requirements set in its visa liberalisation roadmap.
The Commission acknowledges the progress made regarding the Turkish passport and civil registry systems, the importance of the reforms recently adopted in the field of migration and international protection, some positive developments in border cooperation with the EU Member States and FRONTEX, as well as the encouraging initiatives taken to reform anti-terror legislation.
