Bulgaria - Germany
In 6 October 2018, Bulgarian authorities issued an EU-wide alert for the arrest of the murder suspect of Viktoria Marinova, a 30-year-old TV presenter. Before the day was over, the fugitive had been found in Germany. No more than 11 days after the crime, he was returned to Bulgaria, where he was later sentenced to 30 years in jail for murder. German authorities were able to help their Bulgarian colleagues thanks to an arrest warrant that is valid Europe-wide and direct, uninterrupted communication through the EU’s secure information-sharing system.
Netherlands - Austria - Germany
Two foreign fighters from the Netherlands were detected and checked in Austria thanks to a specific check alert in SIS. After receiving information about the hit from Austria, the Dutch prosecutor issued a European Arrest Warrant for both persons. The two suspects could be arrested quickly in Germany following a check on their vehicle for which a SIS alert was issued as well.
Czechia - Germany
During a random check on a car with a German licence plate, a 3-year old girl missing in Germany was found by the Czech Police on a motor way service area whilst being driven in the direction of Prague. When checking the passengers' travel documents in SIS, it transpired that the child was in fact subject to a German Court order restricting her movements to German territory and who was actually being searched by the German Police. The two adults were declaring to be the grandparents of the child butwere not in a position to prove such a relationship. The child was therefore temporarily placed in secure accommodation. Following the communications between the Czech and German Police, she was eventually in the care of the German competent authorities.
Netherlands - Germany
Efficient SIRENE cooperation between the Netherlands and Germany led to the immediate stopping and questioning of a foreign fighter returning to the Netherlands through Turkey and Germany upon his arrival at Schiphol Airport.
Czechia - Germany
A stolen aeroplane, registered in the Czechia, was retrieved in Germany thanks to the entry of an alert in SIS.
Czechia - Slovakia
A mentally ill person, capable of causing harm to others, escaped from a psychiatric hospital. He was located in Slovakia in less than 24 hours after his disappearance thanks to an alert in SIS and the intensive cooperation between the respective SIRENE Bureaux.
Austria - Hungary
A 17-year old Russian citizen was reported missing in Austria. Further to the entry of a missing person alert in SIS, the border guards in Hungary found her in a car heading to Romania with three Romanian citizens. The Hungarian authorities placed her under protection and arrested the abductors.
The Netherlands - Hungary
Hungarian authorities stopped a 16-year old Dutch citizen at the Hungarian-Romanian border on her way to Syria pursuant to a SIS alert. The Hungarian authorities placed her under protection and returned her to the Netherlands.
On 11 January 2015, the border guards apprehended 28 illegal migrants close to the Hungarian-Serbian border on Hungarian territory. There were refusal of entry alerts in SIS on three Albanian and one Kosovo citizen. All persons filed asylum applications and they were transferred to the immigration authorities.
