Thanks to the Schengen Agreement border controls have been abolished between 26 European countries. Every year, Europeans make over 1.25 billion journeys within the Schengen area without showing their passports when crossing internal borders. The Schengen area also makes travel easier for non EU-citizens. In 2014, nearly 16 million Schengen visas were issued by Schengen countries. In addition, the Schengen Agreement facilitates cross-border business in Europe.
