[A mobile phone base station is] a transmission and reception
station in a fixed location, consisting of one or more receive/transmit antenna,
microwave dish, and electronic circuitry, used to handle cellular traffic.
It serves as a bridge between all mobile users in a cell and connects mobile
calls to the mobile switching center.
In the case of cordless phones, a wireless handset communicates via radio
waves with a base station connected to a telephone landline, usually within a
limited range of its base station (which has the handset cradle). In this case,
the base station is on the subscriber’s premises, and is attached to the
telephone network the same way a corded telephone is.
