Statement of the project's aims

Food, socio-economic and demographic data collected in the household budget surveys (HBS) of 9 EU Member States have been harmonised and integrated in the cost-effective DAFNE databank, which currently includes data from 45 surveys of the 9 EU Member States and thus allows the identification and time-trends of European dietary patterns and their socio-demographic determinants.
The proposed project aims at:
Expanding the DAFNE databank to ultimately form a database including food data from at least 3 HBS from each of the 13 European countries (12 EU Member States and Norway). More specifically, the project aims at assembling and harmonising at the minimum 15 HBS datasets (minimum 3 datasets per country) from the following five EU Member States: Austria, Finland, Germany, Portugal and Sweden. The newly harmonised datasets will be incorporated in the DAFNE database.

Developing the methodological approach for estimating the daily availability of macro- and selected micro-nutrients, using food data from the national HBS. The proposed methodological approach will be pilot tested on the data of the Greek HBS undertaken in 1987, 1994 and 1998 and already stored in the DAFNE database.

Developing an EU-applicable protocol for collecting information, in the context of the HBS, on meals taken outside the household; addressing thus a limitation in the use of HBS data for nutritional purposes.
