Stem cell

Definition:

An undifferentiated type of body cell found in bone marrow, growing tissues, and embryonic tissue. The physical location of the stem cell, and the hormonal or growth influences that surround it, will determine what type of adult cell it will become.

Stem cells (usually from umbilical cord blood and bone marrow) can now be grown through cell culture and transformed into specialized cells of various tissues such as muscles or nerves. Stem cells are already used extensively in research and open the possibilityto repair damaged tissues in patients without the problem of rejection of transplanted tissues.
