Summary

Today the members of the EU Platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health met to discuss progress and actions on food reformulation and reducing marketing to children. The participants heard an update by the Director for Public Health in the European Commission and the priorities of the upcoming Austrian Presidency.

The Commission provided an overview of ongoing actions under the Health Programme, the new best practice portal and a first brief update on the experience gained so far with assessment of Platform commitments under the revised Platform methodology. There were discussions on the implementation of the Action Plan on Childhood Obesity in the Member States, and the state of play of the EC report on front-of-pack nutritional labelling. DG JRC gave an update of a selection of recent scientific articles relevant for the area of nutrition and physical activity and the new Thematic Network on the Promotion of Fruit and Vegetables was presented. The members gave an update on a number of commitments on food reformulation and reducing marketing to children, including the new accountability mechanism of the EU Pledge.
