High level group on nutrition and physical activity, Luxembourg, 31 May 2018

Summary

The members of the High Level Group on Nutrition and Physical Activity met to discuss progress and actions on priorities such as food reformulation, reducing marketing to children, public procurement of food and physical activity promotion.

The participants heard the outcomes so far of the Bulgarian Presidency and the priorities of the upcoming Austrian Presidency. The Commission provided an overview of ongoing actions under the Health Programme, the Steering Group on Promotion and Prevention (best practices in the fields of nutrition and physical activity and the new best practice portal) and a first brief update on the experience gained so far with assessment under the revised Platform methodology of commitments of the Platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

There were discussions on the implementation of the Action Plan on Childhood Obesity in the Member States, the state of play of the EC report on front-of-pack nutritional labelling and of the revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive. Finally, the OECD presented the preliminary results of the joint EC/OECD project on the economics of the prevention, estimating the economic burden of obesity and alcohol consumption, and DG JRC gave an update of a selection of recent scientific articles relevant for the area of nutrition and physical activity.
