Com a crescente utilização de redes cirúrgicas na cirurgia uroginecológica, tem-se registado um aumento das complicações relacionadas com a sua utilização (erosão dos tecidos, exposição ou contração da rede, infeções e outros efeitos secundários como dor e disfunções sexuais).  Por este motivo, a Comissão solicitou ao seu Comité Científico dos Riscos para a Saúde Emergentes e Recentemente Identificados (CCRSERI) que avaliasse os riscos para a saúde associados à utilização de redes cirúrgicas.
