Health and structural funds

The EU Cohesion Policy and health

The aim of the EU Cohesion Policy is to reduce economic and social disparities between regions in Europe – mainly through the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF).

Health has increasingly been recognised as an important asset for regional development and competitiveness and is eligible to receive ESIF for investments under various objectives:

  • European Regional Development Fund – funds health infrastructure and equipment, e-health, research and support to SMEs
  • European Social Fund – funds health activities linked to active and healthy ageing, health promotion and addressing health inequalities, support to the health workforce and strengthening public administration capacities

The principles of ESIF 2014-2020 ensure that funding is used effectively by national and regional authorities and that it responds to an overall policy strategy.

How can you get funding for health investments from the European Structural and Investment Funds?

The Commission has published a guide for Member States and beneficiaries on possible health investments under ESIF.

Cooperation with Member States

Member States have full competence in healthcare delivery. They decide, define and implement health sector investments. The Commission works with Member States  to enhance their capacities in the management of structural funds in health and to promote exchange of effective solutions.
